I don’t think this counts as dancing. Or even skipping really. It’s more of an exagerated waddle

So. Let me tell you about the day I took this video. It was the 1 year anniversary of my open heart surgery. It’s about a year old, and I’d say it’s pretty safe to say I’ve improved since then. In case you don’t agree, let’s take a look at some more at my exaggerated waddling.

Clearly I am immobilized by my own mass.

Oh wait… that’s not it, is it? It sort of seems like the opposite. Almost as though the ability to dance is based on strength, effort and passion and not on being skinny. Strange concept I know, let’s see if you can wrap your tiny little mind around it.

not to mention she wasnt waddling at all.. That was clearly a jete, chasse, and assemble.. not waddling. ballet…

Clearly she is performing a saute arabesque, chasse, step-step, assemble devant with arms in fifth.

And as a teacher too, I can’t find much technically wrong with it at all.

Which means not only is she a gifted dancer, she has a wonderful technical foundation that she is executing properly and with lovely mannerism.

Being a ballerina isn’t about how much you weigh. Give me this girl ANY day for a student or dancer to work with. Clearly she has the knowledge and the passion, which means she will be a joy to work with.

Also, for those of you criticizing, you clearly have NO idea how difficult it is to execute a develope ecarte derriere the way she is at the barre in one of her later photos. This takes YEARS of dedicated training, as well as extensive natural facility, such as turnout, which she clearly demonstrates here.

So maybe before you peons thinking you’re masters of ballet judge dancers based on weight, you should actually learn about ballet and technique. Because if you had, you’d recognize that this girl clearly has technique—unlike your basic asses.

the trope isn’t just setting up for us “this man is good at what he does” – the fact that the trope demands our male hero upstage the woman says: even an incompetent man will always be better than the best woman. he could have upstaged the sage boss or whatever other male in power exists in the movie. but he doesn’t. he upstages the woman to earn his pack order because she is, intrinsically, the weakest link. the real fight will be man against man. it always is.

and i wish, i wish it stopped outside of the theater. but the number of men who try (gently) to assure me that they’re actually better at what i have multiple degrees and years of experience in - it tells me it worked. men are always looking to be the hero, to interrupt, to upstage, to flip the woman on her back and expose her to all your fellow men - see! for someone who has been doing this forever, she’s just another woman. i am reminded by a man this is called mansplaining. i said “it’s a system of silencing women” and he said, “no, it’s just an accident.” in the movie, he sees himself pointing to my equation on the board, having just walked in. “here’s the flaw,” he says. in the real life, i’m too frustrated to speak. in the movie, he’s inevitably right.

elle woods flipping her hair and saying what, like it’s hard? was a funny line. it’s funny because in every other movie, it’s said by a guy.

When I took human anatomy, all the boys were *thrilled* to hold the breast implants, but when the professor brought out the jar of preserved penises we had no male volunteers to handle them. THEN she brought out the penis that had been dissected to show the different canals (it split into three more-or-less even sized pieces) and I think 3 boys went straight down like a sack of potatoes. Several more followed when she started pulling it apart and holding it up for the whole class to see. It was like that scene in Dracula Dead and Loving it where Mel Brooks is trying to gross out the med interns. Like, literally. It was hilarious.

Bonus: my anatomy professor (who is a woman) informed me that she had not once, in her 20 years of teaching the class, had a female fainter. Women are hardcore.

A condor has struck up an unusual friendship with a man who saved the huge creature’s life.

The man nursed the condor back to health after it reportedly fell from a nest as a baby.

And the condor clearly didn’t forget his rescuer, as video footage shows the pair greeting each other with hugs and one big warm embrace, after the condor returned.

I survived an abusive relationship. At this point I have talked to and worked with hundreds of people in abusive relationships.

Guess what? telling us to leave never works.

I could write a post about ways to help people leave.

I’ll probably do that one day.

but don’t be that person in the mean time.

This is real quick off the cuff but:

AN ABBREVIATED GUIDE TO ‘holy shit my friend is in an abusive relationshit what do I do’

1. Don’t start shit with the abuser. Your friend? Will pay for it.

I once had a friend slap my abuser.

I am not going to tell you the price I paid b/c I’ve already puked once today and I would like to not do it again.

I once threatened a friend’s abuser.

I almost lost that friend over it.

Don’t do the thing.

2. Understand that the abuser is going to be isolating them.

They may be telling your friend how terrible you are. Any slight- no matter how small will be played up into a big thing. and even if the friend doesn’t hold it against you- it will probably effect how much they reach out to you.

Abusers like to tell their marks things like ‘Oh? A missed your call. Its because they hate you and think you complain too much’

The best way I can tell you to combat that- is just… don’t hold it against them. If they withdraw, don’t be that person like ‘well if you really cared about me you’d have fought for me’

The people who helped the most were those that I felt like.. I could go weeks without talking to and then they’d still listen if I got the courage to come back around.

If you can- work with them to try and schedule things so that they can have support without their abuser getting suspicious. School projects, open places. shit like that.

3. Don’t argue with them that shit is abusive.

Don’t be that person. It will make them feel unsafe with you.

The friends who argued were friends I lost. They were the ones it was easiest for him to make go. Cause here’s the thing… people view isolating as an abuser saying ‘you can’t talk to them!’ and a lot of times its not that.. its an abuser sitting down and saying in a real quiet voice ‘you two argue a lot, and they aren’t respecting you. But I’ll always be here for you okay?’

The most you can do is say “hey.. you know you deserve better than that right?” and if they argue go “I’m not going to argue with you. I don’t want to upset you.

4. If they ask for resources, help them get them.

Don’t offer them unless asked or it will turn into a fight and see above.

5. If they say they’re out of options- help them brain storm ones.

here’s an easy opening to ask if it’s okay to help them find resources.

don’t shove.

6. Be nice to them. consistently.

Too many people were too busy trying to convince me that he was a bad guy- that spending time with them just hurt…

and at least when I was with him it only hurt some of the time.

I got out because I had 4-5 good friends who I had good times with and I finally…. there was the light of ‘oh god this is what healthy relationships feel like. ‘

7. Don’t shove. Don’t pressure.

You can say “I’ll be here for you when you’re ready to leave”

You can remind them of this occasionally.

But don’t be a coercive dick.

Don’t be gross.

Don’t hurt people being abused.

That should not be that hard of a lesson.

Don’t say victim blaming shit to convince them to leave.,

Don’t threaten to leave them if they don’t leave.

Don’t be gross.

Jogger crosses US-Canada border by mistake, is held for two weeks in detention centre

A French tourist who accidentally crossed the border into the US from Canada during an evening jog was sent to a detention centre 125 miles away and held for two weeks until she was released.

Cedella Roman, 19, who is mixed race, was apprehended by US border patrol guards in White Rock, near Vancouver, after illegally entering the country.

She said she had not seen any signs marking the border as she ran along the beach before she went down a path to take a photo of the setting sun when two male officers arrested her.

“[The border guard] started telling me that I had crossed the border illegally and told him that I really did not do it on purpose,” she told Radio Canada.

She was threatened with a five-year ban from the US as the officers explained to her that they could not release her because she had been caught on surveillance cameras.

“I thought, maybe I’ve crossed the border, but maybe they’ll just fine me or they’ll say ‘come back to Canada’ or berate me a little bit,” she said.

Ms Roman had been in Canada since September 2017, spending time with her mother and learning English.

She did not have any identification on her when she was stopped, which further complicated her situation.

She was then transferred to a detention centre in Tacoma, a Department of Homeland Security holding facility, 125 miles south of where she first encountered the officers.

“They put me in the caged vehicles and brought me into their facility,” she said. “They asked me to remove all my belongings, as well as my jewellery; they searched me completely.

“That’s where I realised it was really serious and I started to cry a little.”

At the centre, Ms Roman rang her mother who brought her passport and study permits to prove her identity and right to be in Canada.

Staff at the centre, however, said the Canadian immigration authorities would have to validate the documents before she could be released, which led to a two-week stay at the facility.

“It was just unfair that there was nothing, no sign at the border,” said Christiane Ferne, Cedella’s mother. “It’s like a trap … anybody can be caught at the border like this.”

She was released on June 6 once authorities were satisfied her story was true.

A spokesman for the US Border Services declined to comment on Ms Roman’s case but told Radio Canada that crossing the US border at a place other than a customs post was illegal.

“The regulation applies even if the person claims to have crossed the border accidentally,” the statement said.

Last year, 288 people were arrested for illegally entering the US from the Blaine area of Washington State.

Still my favorite story from the Lord of the Rings set: Viggo Mortensen bonded so much with the horse he rode in the movies that after filming was over he bought it from its owner. If that doesn’t warm your heart I don’t know what could.

A year ago, I drafted a novel which I thought would make a good first publication. I revised it and then did what I always do after I write a thing - I put it in a drawer. The longer the writing, the longer it hangs out in the drawer and this was one of the longest things I’d written all at once.

Fast forward 7 months. I pulled it out of hiding, thinking I had an easy edit and quick ebook to publish.

Boy, was I wrong.

When I reread that draft, I realized I had more than just proofreading to do. I hadn’t counted on learning so much about writing during these last several months. I didn’t realize how much more depth my characters would need, how many ways I could layer my story, add more meaningful conflicts, build in more than token diversity, and generally write a much better story than I’d intended when I first started out. That drawer kept me from putting out something I thought was good but would have been, at best, amateurish and, at worst, mediocre. More importantly, and unbeknownst to me, my story was churning in my subconscious, so when I put pen to paper again, I found had so much more to say.

So I guess the takeaway would be to give your drafts time to breathe. I put that novel in the drawer because I knew I was instinctively too passionate to look at it at the moment. I had to back away and cool off so I could be an objective reader. And I’m glad I did. I know now, when I send it to my beta readers and to my editor (yes, I’m going to pay for a professional edit, Lord help me), I’m going to end up with a product I can be proud of.

Like we do with friends and lovers, give your draft some space, a chance to breathe and to become. Let it sit in your drawer and in your mind without fear. Release it so it can come back to you as hopefully something more wonderful than before.
